AN Technical Information

To get your vehicles fluid delivery system plumbed efficiently and quickly, it’s important to know basic information about hoses, hose ends, and adapters.

What is AN thread?

First it’s important to know what this is all about. AN is a military specification dating back to World War II from a joint effort between the Army and the Navy (hence the AN), and was developed to standardize plumbing systems.

AN sizes generally range from -2 to -32 (though it can be scaled higher), with each step equating to the OD (outside diameter) of the tubing in 1/16? increments. Therefore, a -8 AN would be equal to a 1/2? OD tube. AN does not specify the ID (inside diameter) of the tubing, so it can vary in thickness. We try to keep our tube wall as thin as possible to permit good flow while still maintaining a strong structure.

AN thread uses a flared fitting, using a 37-degree flare to form a metal-to-metal seal. This is similar to other fittings like JIC, which is an industrial variant of AN. They can be interchangeable, but this isn’t recommended because some specifications can be different and the connection might not be as secure as intended.

Note that AN threads are different for bolts and fittings. In bolts the number refers to the diameter of the bolt whereas in a fitting it refers to the OD of the tube and thereby have different threads. For example, AN6 bolt has a 3/8-24 thread [1] whereas an AN6 fitting has a 9/16-18 thread. 37° AN and 45° SAE fittings and tooling are not interchangeable due to the different flaring angles. Mixing them can cause leakage at the flare.

 NPT Technical Information

NPT, or National Pipe Thread, is a U.S. national technical standard for screw threads on threaded pipes and fittings. There are a tapered and straight thread series for different purposes such as rigidity, pressure sealing, or both.

Pipe Thread Types

There are many different specifications for pipe thread, the most common of which is NPT, which stands for National Pipe Taper, and this has a tapered thread for sealing and can provide a seal without thread sealant or teflon tape, though the usage of such sealants is sometimes recommended. Also common is NPS, or National Pipe Straight, and will only provide a seal with some kind of thread sealant. This thread is often used for rigidity purposes, and may be coupled with an o-ring. There are other pipe thread specifications, Such as NPSC, NPSH, NPTF, and NPTR, but they’re generally application-specific and don’t really apply to typical automotive uses.

Tapered Threads

The taper on NPT threads allows them to form a seal when torqued as the flanks of the threads compress against each other, as opposed to parallel/straight thread fittings or compression fittings in which the threads merely hold the pieces together and do not provide the seal. The various types of pipe threads are designed for use both with or without thread sealants,[1] as particular applications demand. The sealants, where used, are typically thread seal tape or pipe dope (sometimes plumber’s putty). As the thread body is tapered (0.75 in/ft or 62.5 mm/m), a larger diameter keeps compressing into a smaller diameter and finally forms a seal (no clearance remains between the crests and roots of the threads because of the taper). This means that NPT fittings should be burr-free and lubricated using a lubricant like lubricating paste or thread seal tape. The use of tape also helps to limit corrosion on the threads, which otherwise can make future disassembly nearly impossible.

Hose Technical Information

Hoses are sized according to the fittings for which they are designed. They have precise ID and OD so that they match up perfectly with their respective hose end. Definitely don’t attempt to mix sizes, this won’t work and can result in leakage or a fire. Our hoses are available in several different styles – rubber push lock, nylon braided, stainless steel braided, PTFE. Let’s review each style.

Rubber Push Lock Hose

Rubber push lock hose is very useful for applications where the pressure is not very high, the hose will not be near any sources of high heat, and the fluids flowing through it aren’t very hot. Perfect for things like vacuum hoses, coolant hoses, catch cans, etc. While you can certainly use these hoses for fuel and oil, as their pressure, temperature, and chemical ratings are more than suffice for those fluids, due to the risk of damage or fire in the event of an accident or hose damage, we recommend going with a braided hose. Automotive fuels are extremely flammable, and if you were using the hose for oil and it became damaged, it could result in a loss of oil pressure and damage to your engine or transmission. These hoses are rated for up to 250 PSI depending on size, and are sized to only work with push lock hose ends. Do not attempt to use a swivel hose end with these fittings, they aren’t sized for that application.

Nylon Braided Hose

This is our most popular style of hose. These hoses use a CPE synthetic rubber liner surrounded by a thin stainless steel inner braid for strength, and is then bound by a thick nylon outer braid. These hoses are very lightweight, very flexible, abrasion resistant, corrosion resistant, less likely to ground on exposed wires, and are compatible with fuels like ethanol and methanol. These hoses are rated for up to 500 PSI depending on the size.

Stainless Steel Braided Hose

Stainless steel braided hose isn’t as popular as it used to be, having fallen in favor of nylon braided hose. These also use a CPE synthetic rubber liner with a thin stainless steel inner braid, but instead of being wrapped in a nylon braid, it’s got a thick, strong stainless steel braid. This makes the hose very strong and able to handle higher pressures, but the tradeoff is that they are heavier, less flexible, and can possibly ground exposed wires. Care must be used when routing these hoses as while they are very abrasion-resistant, they can cause damage to the parts that they are in contact with over time. On our 240SX racecar, we had oil cooler hoses in contact with our intercooler piping, and it nearly caused a hole to be worn all the way through! These hoses are compatible with ethanol and methanol based fuels and are rated for up to 1,000 PSI depending on size.

PTFE Hose

This is our ultimate hose. These use a teflon liner with a thin stainless steel inner braid and a nylon outer braid. These hoses can handle extremely high pressures and temperatures and are impervious to almost any chemical, and are the recommended hose for use with ethanol, methanol, power steering, braking systems, and nitrous systems. Due to it’s construction it is limited in it’s bend radius and can’t be routed through tight spaces very well. These hoses are rated for up to 4,000 PSI depending on size.
